U.S. Representative Rosa De Lauro (D-CT), a consistent health advocate, is once again supporting women's health with her bill H.R. 1961 , also known as the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2009. In short, this bill, which amends the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), the Public Health Service Act, and the Internal Revenue Code, works to provide better coverage and medical care for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. It requires that health plans provide coverage for a minimum hospital stay for mastectomies, lumpectomies, and lymph node dissection for the treatment of breast cancer and coverage for secondary consultations.

We just wanted to highlight a great interview of Kirstin Gillibrand at Change.org, by Jen Nedeau. Here are a couple of the poignant things that Gillibrand said, but we encourage our members to read the entire article over there.

"I do think we've reached a point where women really can get elected at the highest levels of government all over the country. It's just a matter of seats opening up and more women running." And "I believe women in leadership can have a transformational impact on our communities and on the public policies that have the deepest impact on our families' lives."

As a young girl, I remember thinking that the Constitution was the most amazing thing in the entire world. To me, it was not only sacred, but also magical. All that I cared about, I felt, could be attributed to that one document. I could never hear enough stories about the drafting of the Constitution, and always imagined that if ever there was one moment in history I could go back and witness, that would be it. I truly thought that the Constitution was almost like a cloak of invincibility for our country - all of us safely protected within its words. Read More...

In a radio interview on Wednesday, July 29, with WBAP-AM of Fort Worth and DallasSenator Kay Bailey Hutchison officially announced that she is stepping down from her Senate seat.
