August 26th is Women’s Equality Day. Rep. Bella Abzug established women’s Equality Day in 1971 as a way to commemorate the passage of the 19th amendment, the Woman Suffrage Movement Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women full voting rights in 1920.

WomenCount Radio is happy to welcome California Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan to the show this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PST/10:30 p.m. EST. Joan is the only woman in the crowded field to replace House Rep. When I was first asked to be on a panel at BlogHer about what is 'pro-woman' in a post-Palin world, I was excited. While many feminists just wanted Sarah Palin to go away, I have always held that her emergence was an opportunity for us to discuss what it means to be a feminist. The word has been demonized to the point where even the most ardent women's rights activists shy away from the label. And when I say that, I mean the demonization that happened from conservatives, not the critique from women of color or others who in a sense are feminists, but don't call themselves feminists. First, congratulations to Sonia Sotomayor, who was just confirmed to the Supreme Court. That puts the percentage of women on the High Court at 22 percent. It’s a step in the right direction so that the Court – in Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s words -- “looks right.”

Meanwhile, in elected office, since the historic election of 2008 we’re down two women governors and one woman member of the US House. We can’t afford to lose any more seats.
