Everybody is buzzing over the huge step taken for healthcare reform this past weekend. And everybody is also buzzing about the cost. Since the early days of our country when the constitution was drafted, conveniently leaving out any mention of women, women have been struggling to gain a voice in this country.

There we were in the Spirit Halloween store in search of the perfect costume. I had been urging my four-year-old daughter to go with Wonder Woman. We headed straight for the section that had the complete selection of Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman costumes, along with a handful of other less known female superhero characters (I know these characters have their own history of sexist stigma, as far as my four year old os concerned they're just girl superheroes, equal to the men).

Sexism can find its way into political discourse at every level. On Friday, I wrote an article that was somewhat timely but politically leaning on a local matter. I don't want to go into what it was because I'd rather not detract from the subject as it's mildly controversial. However, I made it clear that it was my own opinion based on my own experience and I put up the article. Because it was timely, I thought it would get some good traction and I moved on with my busy weekend. Until the trolls attacked.

I knew the moment I found out that I was pregnant that I was going to breastfeed. It was what I felt was the best choice for my son and myself. I was committed to breastfeeding him for the first year of his life, even if that meant having to pump at work every day once I returned from maternity leave. I read up on the laws in my state and discussed my choice with my HR department, who also read up on what their responsibilities were. They offered me the use of an empty office that had an adjacent restroom. It was perfect.

This past Sunday over 150 people gathered at Hyde Park in New York to celebrate one of the most amazing women in the history of the feminist movement. Eleanor Roosevelt was born October 11, 1884 making Sunday her 125th birthday. Here at WomenCount Eleanor Roosevelt holds a very special place in our hearts because she of course chaired the original Presidential Commission on the Status of Women in 1961 that was put into place by President Kennedy.

Since the 2008 election, women have had several opportunities to gain seats in both the House and Senate.
I couldn’t help but get caught up in reading Marcus Buckingham’s recent post on Huffington Post, What's Happening To Women's Happiness? It seemed to strike a chord with a few others and I was no exception. The basis for the post came from a U.S. General Social Survey that’s been being conducted since 1972. One of the questions on the survey is, “How happy are you on a scale of one to three, three being very happy and one being not very happy.

Recently I stumbled upon an article in a local Sioux City paper website that caught my attention, Wanted: Women lawmakers. Not being that finding more women lawmakers is one of our goals here at WomenCount I of course read the article immediately. As it turned out Sioux City is sorely lacking in female candidates, and they’re looking.

A lot of buzz has been surrounding the recent results of a study done by researchers at Stanford University and the University of Chicago that gave evidence that female politicians accomplish more then their male counterparts. We here at WomenCount don’t like to say “We Told You So,” but ahem, we told you so.
