First, congratulations to Sonia Sotomayor, who was just confirmed to the Supreme Court. That puts the percentage of women on the High Court at 22 percent. It’s a step in the right direction so that the Court – in Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s words -- “looks right.”
Meanwhile, in elected office, since the historic election of 2008 we’re down two women governors and one woman member of the US House. We can’t afford to lose any more seats.
Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan is in the top tier of candidates seeking to replace departed Rep. Ellen Tauscher in the 10th district of California, and if women pull together we can help her win.
As is often the case in special elections, there’s a crowded field running for the seat vacated when Tauscher became an undersecretary of state. Although there are 14 candidates officially in the race, three have emerged at the top of the pack. They include Buchanan, state Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, and state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier. The fact that she is the only serious woman in the race can help Buchanan – if we all pitch in. Like WomenCount, Emily’s List and other womens’ organizations have endorsed her campaign, and we know that women turn out to vote in larger numbers than men. But it will take resources to make sure Buchanan turns out her votes. Please step up to support Buchanan by contributing to her campaign.
Listen to her story: The daughter of a waitress and a bartender, Buchanan was the first in her family to earn a college degree. She left a successful early career at Delta Dental to raise her five children. During those years she became an active community leader, serving 18 years on the San Ramon Valley School Board. She won her state Assembly seat in a hard-fought election last November.
As the “education candidate,” Buchanan has signed up hundreds of teachers and educators in the “Educators for Joan” campaign. And with her background at Delta Dental, she is also equipped to enter Congress as a player on the economy and health care reform.
The election is Sept. 1 and early voting has already started. Let’s join together to help women hold this California House seat.
WomenCount Radio Joan Buchanan is our guest on WomenCount Radio in two weeks, on Aug. 20th. And tonight, don’t miss Rep.
